The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum, 302 Marine Street, Carrabelle, has recently received an educational Grant from the The St. Joe Community Foundation. According to Ms. Linda Minichiello, volunteer curator,
“The grant is to be used to purchase materials for in-service training for Panhandle area teachers.” She stated that approximately 50 teachers would be at the museum on April 12th to learn about World War II, its history and impact on the Panhandle area as well as the nation. Mr. Mike Powelson with the Florida Dept. of Education will give a CD presentation created for teachers regarding Florida’s contribution in W.W. II.
Ms. Cathy Nobles, of the Panhandle Area Educational Consortium, is responsible for scheduling and co-coordinating these types of professional development events for area teachers.
“The important role of Carrabelle’s Camp Gordon Johnston during WWII should be remembered and shared with history students throughout the state,” said Jane McNabb, executive director of The St. Joe Community Foundation. “It’s remarkable to realize that more than a quarter million soldiers prepared for the D-Day landings on the shores of Franklin County. The Foundation is pleased to be able to assist in this training for our region’s educators.”
“Recognizing the importance of keeping our history intact for future generations’ is a main goal of the museum, and we are fortunate to have The St. Joe Community Foundation to assist in meeting that goal.
